Kominka UK is an emerging project focused on traditional Japanese timber-framed buildings, from rural houses to shrines and temple gates, each shaped by a time-honoured understanding of materials and craft.

Working closely with our partners in Japan, our work is guided by our respect for the cultural and architectural heritage these structures embody and for the craftspeople and communities formed through them.

Through careful dismantling, relocation, and exchange, we explore how these buildings and the knowledge that they hold, can continue into a sustainable future.

The project operates between Japan and the UK.
